Giovanni Savarese

Player Background

Giovanni Savarese spent 3 years with the Metro Stars between 1996-1998 - a club based in New Jersey who play United States' top football league.

The striker was top scorer in all 3 seasons he spent at the club and won their Player of the Year award in 1998.

In his 3 seasons with the Metro Stars, he scored a club record of 44 goals and was a major fans favourite during his time there.

He then joined New England Revolution, nicknamed the Revs, a club who play in the same league as the Metro Stars.

He then left Major League Soccer in the U.S to join Italian club Perugia in 2000. His loan to Viterbese meant he didn't play one game for the Seria A club.

He returned to Major League Soccer in 2000 and joined San Jose Earthquakes but he failed to find the net and a loan move to Swansea City then followed.

Savarese has also scored ten goals in 30 caps for the Venezuela national team.

His time at Swansea

After finding it difficult to even get one goal with San Jose Earthquakes, he was loaned out to the Swans in October 2000 and spent the rest of the season at the Vetch.

He scored 11 goals in 28 games for us and I remember Savarese making his debut for us against Stoke. He scored a brace which gave us a 2-1 victory.

He also bagged a hatrick at home to Luton in a 5-3 defeat which were his last few goals for Swansea until he experienced a goal drought for the remainder of the season (totalling 13 games).

Where is he now?

He left Swansea in May 2001 and joined Millwall at the start of the 2001/02 season.

He played just one game before leaving in December.

He returned to his home country Venezuela to play for Deportivo Italchacao and had spells with various other clubs.

He's now currently back with the Metro Stars as head of their Youth Development.
