Swansea To Beat Newcastle for Striker Gomis?
Swansea City are back in for French striker Bafetimbi Gomis, with reports in France suggesting that the free agent is set to sign a 3-year contract.
Gomis was strongly linked with a move to the Liberty Stadium last Summer, and we reported here
that the Swans offered him better terms than his then-club Lyon.
However, the 28 year-old decided to stay on with the Ligue 1 outfit before considering his options this year when his contract expired.
Gomis' agent recently talked about his client's future - and that talks were happening with an 'ambitious club' who previously made a big bid for him last Summer. He could well be talking about Swansea City - who bidded for the striker last year.'I am speaking to five Premier League clubs about Bafetimbi and it is no surprise there is a lot of interest in him as he is one of the best free agents out there.
'I am speaking to one very ambitious chairman of an ambitious club and they are very keen to sign him and Bafetimbi will go to a club who proves they really want him.
'The club who are really pushing for him have held a long-term interest in him and made a big bid for him before when he was under contract at Lyon.'
Newcastle United and West Ham United have also been linked with Gomis, but if reports in France are to be believed, the player has opted to join the Swans, and is expected to be in the city sometime next week to sign a three-year contract.
Last season, Gomis averaged exactly a goal every two games in all competitions - with 14 goals in 29 Ligue 1 starts, plus an extra 3 goals in 5 Europa League games.
It could be the second time in a year that Swansea City have beaten Newcastle United to signing a striker, having signed Bony last Summer while the Magpies wouldn't commit to paying as much as £12m.
Inevitably, the media will automatically assume that Bony will now be on his way - but hopefully Gomis and Bony can develop an attacking partnership at Swansea City - for one season at least.
