Where Football Is Always Universal
On a fun filled day at the Den Arsenal and Leeds lined up for the FA cup final, no not that one. 14,000+ spectators took to the stands to see Arsenal Ladies thrash a resolute Leeds United 5-0. It was a great showpiece for the women`s game, in which there was some excellent football.

The BBC broadcasted the game live on Bank holiday Monday, did any of you lads actually tune into the game? Not many I would imagine. However the Women`s game has really evolved, with the world cup in China only a year away the time for the Women`s game to step out of the shadows of the Men`s game may be on the cards.

On that bank holiday Monday, thousands of girls went to the game, these players were great ambassadors to the game. However this resurgence of the Women`s game is not such an unprecedented phenomenon, thousands of female football fans line the terraces week in week out, up and down the country.

Our club is the same too, as a Female swans fan sometimes I find it extremely intimidating to say the least. Yes football may seem a Male dominated passion but slowly but surely Female fans like myself are holding our ground.

We are more knowledgeable about the game than many male fans give us credit for. Yes we do know what the offside rule is and no, some off us don`t come to see the footballers for their good looks. But why are many more Female fans coming out the proverbial woodwork? Well films like Bend it like Beckham have helped enormously it has given Female Fans the confidence to go through the turnstiles. And no we don`t get dragged there by our boyfriends, Husbands or Partners. We enjoy the beautiful game as much as the next person, and no we don`t just sit there I feel a emotional connection to the Swans, I have done since my grandfather took me to my first swans game 17 years ago . Sitting in the east stand that day there was not much female representation and many people then asked him have you got the babysitting duties to which my grandfather replied in his best Derbyshire accent "no she cant stop watching the blooming football she loves it".

Football in this city of ours is at its core and no matter what sex you are, you can feel it . I even have managed to persuade my " Football Virgin" mother to get a season ticket. She now knows the offside rule, knows the players, knows where they play, makes comments and more recently has captured the emotion of what being a Swans fan is.

I for one thought that would never happen , but why did it? Put simply the game is more accessible. I remember a few years ago the club ran "Ladies Days" usually around Valentines Days, that would be a great idea for the new stadium it would certainly help bridge the gap and encourage more Female fans to come every game. I was pessimistic writing for this site in the first place, would you all treat me differently because I was Female, yes when I introduced myself to the forum you all called me " Mate" until I wrote for the site my true sex was revelled, I held my own or at least I thought I did, but that`s not the point. The Point being is that female fans like myself can, that`s the fundamental difference from 10 years ago our views are becoming more valued when they are expressed.

Football is always a universal language, you share the same emotion, the same passion and the same will and desire for the Swans (or whoever you support) to win.

We don`t expect you guys to patronise us by explaining the offside rule and the difference between active and inactive, but we would say encourage us to get more involved, the more people do that the more of us will be going through the turnstiles week in week out.

I know, I will be renewing my season ticket next year looking forward to 23+ more nail-biting games. I`m not nervous, nor am I afraid of shouting "Come on city" because its not lady like. Why, well because football is Always Universal.
