Thomas Butler started his career at the stadium of light with then premiership side Sunderland. He emerged through their youth ranks and was touted as the next big thing for the republic of Ireland. He cemented that promise with the under 15's player of the year in 1997. He also played for the Republic of Ireland in the world Youth cup in South Africa.

Following his successful international exploits, Butler made his first Premiership appearance vs West Ham United. Unfortunately he could not capitalise on the opportunity and his dip in form meant he was loaned out to the Quakers.

He made 8 appearances for Darlington before returning to the stadium of light. On his return Thomas was called up to the full ROI squad and played in a 3-0 win against Finland. Butler then reassessed his situation and was contemplating quitting the game.

A move to East end Park with Dunfermline Athletic beckoned as he joined them on a initial trial basis. He made only 6 full and 6 substitute appearances for the Scottish outfit, his contract was not renewed.

Thomas was now a free agent, Hartlepool United offered the Irishman a short term contract. He greatly impressed at Victoria Park, making 31 appearances (6 as a substitute) for the pool.

In that season Hartlepool United got relegated from League one and moved to south Wales for a fee believed to be around £75.000.

Butler was much criticised for his lack of crossing ability by Hartlepool fans, however after a shaky start to his Swansea career he has certainly rejuvenated his career here at the Liberty Stadium.

He offers pace and skill on the flank and always causes problems for defenders. He has also worked on his crossing ability that was much beelined by many pool fans.

Butler has also immortalised himself with the Swansea faithful with a stunning performance against Sheffield United in the FA cup. Butler will have to compete for his place this season with the arrival of Paul Anderso
