Garry Monk is a strong, 6ft central defender and he started his career with Torquay United as a trainee before signing for Premiership side, Southampton in the 1995/96 season.

He then joined Torquay on loan 2 years later before returning to Southampton to make his Premiership debut.

He was never able to get into their first team and was sent out on further loan spells with Stockport, Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford.

He was still unable to gain many appearances at the Dell and after a loan spell with Barnsley last season, he joined them permanantly. He had just 1 start for Barnsley since joining them and he signed a 3 year contract with the Swans in the summer of 2004.

Monk proved to be a excellent signing in his first season with us in League Two but the following season in League One he performed poorly.

Jackett announced that he would be made team captain next season (06/07) and the majority of Swans fans didn't approve of the decision after his poor performances last year.

Monk was unable to prove himself as a commanding skipper after suffering a knee ligament injury at Scunthorpe which kept him sidelined for the whole season.

Garry signed a new 1 year deal this Summer and says he looks forward to the new season under Martinez.
