Ashley Williams joined Swansea City from Stockport County for a club record fee of 400,000 in May 2008 after a successful loan spell.

The 24 year-old started off with West Brom but they released him when he was 16, he then joined Hednesford Town in 2001.

Ashley Williams was captain at Stockport County was an important player in their first team and the club saw it as a huge loss when he joined the Swans.

He is a consistent performer at centre back, despite not having the most impressive of loan spells at the club at the end of the 2007/2008 season, but he has improved immensely since then.

Williams is a strong player, particularly dominant in the air and has been a first team regular for Swansea City ever since he joined.

His performances attracted the attention of Wales boss John Toshack who called him up to the international squad for the first time in March 2008 vs Luxembourg. Since then he has won 13 caps. He was born in Wolverhampton but he has a welsh grandfather which enables him to play for Wales.
