Swansea City 3 Millwall 2

Swansea City have progressed through to the 2nd Round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a beating Milwall 3-2 tonight at the Liberty Stadium.

Roberto Martinez rung the changes in the centre of midfeild. In a changed midfield O'Leary, Craney, Butler and Anderson were given opportunities to show their worth.

New Goalkeeper David Knight had to be contented with a place on the bench as De Vries was given the nod ahead of Knight. Bauza was also given a place in the starting 11. Pratley, Scotland and Robinson made the bench.

It was Millwall that started the brighter with some good play in the centre of midfeild. It was in this good spell of play that the visitors had the first chance of the night. Senda whipped a cross into the box which May headed it goal ward but missed the target.

The Visitors continued to press in the opening stages and were utilising the right flank to their advantage. Millwall continued to search for an opening in the Swansea defense but could not find the killer pass to trouble Dorus De Vries.

In a early substitution for Swansea City Angel Rangel was replaced by Kevin Amankwaah as a ploy to get around the 6 player rule.

After breaking up play in the centre of midfeild Swansea launched the first meaningful attack on the Millwall goal. Thomas Butler took advantage of a Millwall error and whipped in a dangerous ball into the box. The ball evaded everyone at the near post but steaming in behind unmarked on loan Liverpool midfeilder Paul Anderson fired the ball home from 6 yards out.

Swansea City's lead only lasted 3 minutes when poor organisation in the Swansea defense allowed Millwall to equalise. Jay Simpson was able to cross the ball into the area which evaded the Swansea defense and left two Millwall players clear in space.Ben May controlled the ball well and fired past De Vries from 6 yards to equalise for Millwall.

Millwall regained some control over the game and started to pressure the Swansea defense. Millwall could not capitalise in this good spell as both Alan Dunne and Jamie O'Hara saw efforts blocked by the Swansea defense.

Darryl Duffy in search of his first goal of the season saw a 12 yard effort sail over the bar.

Half time Score 1-1

Swansea city started the 2nd half better with a much higher tempo to the game. Millwall gave away a sloppy free kick after Butler surged through the midfield,Whitbread cynically felled the Irishman outside the box. The resulting free kick Butler stepped up but saw his effort sail over the bar.

After some poor marking Simpson gave the visitors the lead 8 minutes after the restart. Simpson was able to latch onto a pass by Scott Barron and run into the box and fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. This was met with rapturous celebration by the 50 or so travelling Millwall supporters.

The Swans looked to get an equaliser and Martinez made a double change on the hour mark.Scotland and Pratley came on to replace Craney and Bauza. Scotland's impact was evident as he combined well with Thomas Butler.

It was this partnership and the Pratley's presence in the midfield that made the difference to Swansea city.

Man of the Match Butler picked up the ball half way into the Millwall half and skipped past two defenders. He offloaded it to Jason Scotland who out muscled his marker to coolly put the ball past Edwards in the Millwall goal for the Swansea equaliser.

Swansea continued to keep the pressure on the Millwall defense and got their just rewards in the 77th minute.

Darryl Duffy whipped in a dangerous cross into the box which saw Whitbread put the ball into his own net.

Swansea were not content with a 1 goal advantage and pressed on to further their lead. 5 minutes later a resurgent Thomas Butler steamed into the box and unleashed a effort from 18 yards which went over the bar.

Millwall tried to find an opening in the Swansea defence and nearing full time were awarded a free kick when Jason Scotland was adjudged to have fouled Jamie O'Hara.Chris Hackett saw his free kick effort saved by Dorus De Vries.

De Vries had the vision to dispatch the ball out of hand into the Millwall half to pick out Paul Anderson. Anderson got the ball under control and ran towards the Millwall goal. Jamie O'Hara could not match the wingers pace and cynically took out Anderson from behind.Mr Penn under no hesitation sent the on loan midfielder off. The game finished 3-2 to Swansea City.
