Walsall 1 - Swansea 3

Banks's Stadium

27/08/07

Attendance:

Walsall 1 Swansea City 3

Roberto Martinez's side recovered from conceding an early goal to win their first game of the season 3-1 away at Walsall. Scotland was on the scoresheet yet again while Andy Robinson grabbed a brace.

Walsall dominated the early exchanges as the Swans seemed half asleep. De Vries had already been forced to make one save when Walsall took the lead after just over 5 minutes. The otherwise impressive Bodde was caught in possession inside his own half and Hall was released down the right flank, he badly miss-hit his shot put it crawled across the six yard box & as none of the Swansea defence were able to deal with it, Butler slid in to finish at the back post.

The goal seemed to spark the Swans into action, and they started to try and keep the ball on the deck rather than hitting aimless long balls like they had been for the first 5 minutes. Robinson found himself in space on the left & cut inside to release a shot that deflected off Duffy`s head into the goal.

The Swans continued to dominate and were soon ahead thanks to a disputed Jason Scotland goal. Scotland found himself free in a similar position to Robinson and drilled his shot against the post, the ball came back out, hit keeper Ince on the back & was judged to have crossed the line despite the Walsall defender`s best efforts to clear on the line.

'Monk did ok but Lawrence was all over the place.'.
Walsall came back into the game just before half time. Hall was left unmarked at the back post and his looping header beat De Vries but hit the cross bar and came back down on the line. Despite this narrow escape the Swans defence continued to present chances to Walsall and Leon Britton was forced to clear an effort off the line from a corner.

The decisive point in the game came after an hour when Duffy raced through on goal, he was brought down by Roper and the ref pointed at the stop and showed the Walsall defender the red card. Robinson wrestled the ball from Scotland to take the penalty and made no mistake, powering the ball pat Ince.

Even with 10 men, Walsall continued to cause the shaky Swansea defence some problems with De Vries being forced into a couple of decent saves and Bodde clearing an effort from Sonko off the line.

The Swans were by far the better team, dominated possession and looked dangerous going forward. But defensively they looked vulnerable, with Lawrence looking particularly shaky at the back.
