Sigurdsson Stars In 4-0 Win At Plymouth
27th July 2014 - 5pm
Attendance: 4,943 (427 away)
Swansea City's new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson assisted one and scored two in 25 second-half minutes to help his side beat League 2 outfit Plymouth Argyle in a pre-season friendly at Home Park.
After only a draw and a defeat in the two games during their recent USA Summer Tour, Monk's side were hoping to get their first win of pre-season.
Fabianski, Rangel, Chico, Bartley, Kingsley, Ki, Shelvey, Routledge, Dyer, Sheehan, Donnelly.
Subs: Tremmel, Williams, Amat, Taylor, Tiendalli, Bray, King, Richards, Montero, Sigurdsson, Bony, Gomis.
Before the game, the Swans were rocked by the news that Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes could both miss the start of the season due to knee injuries. Scans in a fortnight will help to determine how bad the injuries are.
After Rory Donnelly's early opener thanks to a mistake by the host's goalkeeper, Sigurdsson came on to show off his talent, and why he could be such an important signing.
In the second half, Monk was forced into making changes as Donnelly and Chico went off with injuries. Other substitutes after the break included Richards for Ki, Montero for Routledge, Tiendalli for Rangel, and Amat for Bartley. Later, Taylor, Bray, King, Cornell and Sigurdsson replaced Kingsley, Dyer, Sheehan, Fabianski and Shelvey.
Sigurdsson's corner saw the Swans double the lead, as Amat stabbed the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
Sigurdsson then got his first, scoring from 8 yards and also went close to getting his second, but his volley went over the bar.
He rounded the game off right at the end with a stunning free-kick to make it 4-0 to Swansea City.
