It would be Swansea who would get off to the worst of possible starts when Mark Hundson buried the ball past Dorus De Vries after latching onto a Jonjo Shelvey corner.

Ferrie Bodde had a chance to level the scoring after Darren Pratley was fouled 30 yards outside of the penalty area. Bodde's fizzling shot was spilled by Weaver in the Charlton goal but no one was on the follow up to capitalize.

Quickly on the break Marcos Painter surged down the flank and whipped in a cross to Guillem Bauza but the Spaniard could not control the ball and the chance was gone. Just moments later Ashley Williams cleared the danger but parried the ball out for a corner to Charlton. Lloyd Sam could only see his excellent volley saved by De Vries in the Swansea goal. It would be Roberto Martinez's side that were lucky not to go 2-0 down after Luke Varney was sent clean through on goal but the former Crewe Alexander forward was adjudged to have fouled his marker Matty Collins.

Swansea were ending the first half with a sustained period of pressure but could not break down a resilient and well organized home defense, after Bauza tried to breach Weaver's goal. After a cutting move Thomas Butler forced a save out of Weaver but the former Manchester City shot-stopper spilled the shot again but the advancing Leon Britton could not latch onto the spilled ball.

Half time Score: Charlton Athletic 1-0 Swansea City

Swansea started the second half the brighter when Bauza put Britton into a good position but the diminutive midfielder saw his shot go wide. Gaining in confidence the Liberty Stadium outfit surged forwards and were unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal after Bodde played Pratley in who put the ball in the back of the net but the linesman had other ideas and flagged for offside.

It would be Pardew who would make his first change bringing the experienced Matt Holland on for the 16 year old Jonjo Shelvey.

For all his endeavor on the flank Thomas Butler could not manage to break through a Charlton defense to trouble Weaver.Five minutes later Martinez made his first change of the game bringing on Fabien Brandy for Guillem Bauza. Garry Monk received a yellow card soon after the change of personnel after pulling down Luke Varney on the edge of the area. Matt Holland took the resulting free kick but fired it straight into the Swansea wall. Monk was then just under a minute later was given his marching orders after a challenge on former Ipswich midfielder Matt Holland.

Martinez keen to get Swansea onto the offensive last seasons top goal scorer Jason Scotland came on for Mark Gower.Scotland nearly made an immediate impact after combing well with Brandy but was dispossessed by Semedo. Just seconds later the striker had the chance to level the scoring with a fierce shot but Weaver had the effort covered. Soon after Jordi Gomez made his leauge debut as he came on for the hard working Darren Pratley.

Shrugging off his marker Scotland managed to send a well weighted ball into the danger zone but no one could get the vital touch that could see the Swans get back on terms. The sucker punch from Charlton came soon after Andy Grey's flying header had De Vries in the Swansea goal well beaten. It could have been worse as Varney went through on Dorus De Vries goal but the Dutchman saved his effort.

Swansea could not add a consolation goal at the death. Jordi Gomez's free kick effort was spilled by Weaver but Brandy could not score.
