Newport Vs Swansea

Swansea City's FAW cup campaign starts in earnest tonight as they face a short journey down the M4 to face Newport County at Newport Stadium.

Last time these two sides met in competitive action was in last seasons 1st round FA Cup.The game was marred by two separate incidents that marred the reputation of the Newport club.

Peter Beadle was sent to the stands following a tirade of abuse in the direction of fourth official Alan Sheffield.

Moments later the fourth official was struck by a coin from the stands and was admitted to Hospital with a burst artery.

Newport County's Chairman Chris Blight hopes the game will go ahead without incident. Blight has also suggested that if any trouble is seen on the scale that was seen on 11th November 2006 he would resign from his position at the club.

Police chiefs have also warned supporters that they will be vigilant to potential trouble.

Superintendent Julien Knight insists that South Wales Police have been working closely with the Newport club to ensure the safety of supporters this evening.

Martinez is expected to give youngsters Joe Allen and Shaun McDonald a run out, resting key players with the crucial league game against Carlisle on the weekend.

Vital Quotes:

Newport Manager Peter Beadle:

''They're top of their league and still in the FA Cup so they're not likely to play their first XI.'

That will give us a good chance to progress, even though it will still be a strong side they put out.'

Swansea Swansea City Manager Roberto Martinez on the game:
''The FAW Premier Cup is great for the youngsters.'

It is a competition which can give us a lot of positives. It gives me an opportunity to see the youngsters play in a competitive game.'

They have been working really hard and now is their time to shine.' .'

Newport County Team News:

to come..

Player to watch: Charlie Griffin

The Bath born striker is the Blue Square South sides top scorer in the league and has vast league.

He has proved a consistent goal scorer and will cause the Swansea defense problems.

Swansea City Team News:

Swansea will be without Striker Warren Feeney who has returned to Cardiff City for treatment on an ankle ligament injury.

Jason Scotland is also set to miss his first taste of the FAW Premier cup due to a minor stomach strain.

Owain Tudur Jones is the only other major doubt as he looks set to return from injury in January.

Player to watch: Guillem Bauza

Spanish born striker Guillem Bauza has shown an adept skill in scoring in Swansea's cup runs so far this season following 3 goals in 2 FA Cup games.

The striker was unlucky not to add to his tally in the FA Cup 2nd round replay against Horsham a few weeks ago.

Bauza's work rate and ability to press the opposition defense will pose Newport County's defense a few questions.
