Briefly last Saturday Swansea City could taste promotion to the Championship, only to be undone by two late goals by Joe Kuffor and Joe Partington as Bournemouth scupper the promotion party. Other results did not go Swansea`s way with 10 man Doncaster Rovers snatching a late point against Huddersfield Town thanks to a 83rd minute strike by Paul Green
As Roberto Martinez finalizes his plans to face Gillingham , Swansea could seal promotion without kicking a ball in anger. Third placed Doncaster Rovers welcome Swindon Town tomorrow evening and should Maurice Malpas side win over a resolute Rovers side Swansea would be promoted even before they kick off on Saturday afternoon.
This scenario has not even entered the mind of Martinez as he looks to end his first season in management with promotion to the second tier of British football as he fully focused in on the task of securing all three points against Mark Stimsons Gillingham side fighting for their league survival.
Seeing the game on Saturday as a challenge the former Stevenage Borough boss wants to spoil the promotion party as Gillingham are looking to overhaul Crewe Alexandra in 19th place and get out of the relegation zone.
Stimson will take great solace in the knowledge that the Kent club have a good record against Swansea at home.In what could be a very open game both sides will not be content with a point.
The South Wales club have also sold out of their allocation for the game that could see the clubs promotion to the Championship. Arrangements have been put in place for fans to watch the game in the comfort of the Liberty Stadium`s hospitality suites. Over 1000 tickets have been sold for the event and Stadium officials could be set for a sell out with tickets to the Riverside, Morfa and St Helens lounges the only spaces left available .
Vital Swansea will be as usual be on hand if you cannot get a ticket with match updates , Chat room and Radio Commentary.
Gillingham Manager Mark Stimson:
"It will make it a very good game because of the atmosphere. They will probably come here and expect to beat us three or four nil, like Carlisle did, but we are going to try and spoil their party and they will have to make it happen at their place a week later. This is what you are in football for, for these crowds, the atmosphere and the buzz of it all. If you are player you want to be involved in and, speaking as a manager, these are the ones you want to be in charge of. This is why I came to the club, for these kinds of challenges and we will go out there on Saturday with a game plan and hopefully take something from it. " |
' 'I am expecting to go into the Gillingham game having to do it ourselves. I`m not expecting Doncaster to slip up. At the end of the day, when have Swansea City done things the easy way? It doesn't happen here. Whatever happens it should be a special game. A draw will be no good to either side and we will both be going all out for the win." It`s one of our bogey grounds, I don't know why, but we've tended to find it difficult to be ourselves there." |
Midfielder Mark Bentley will miss the crunch game as he spends an enforced game in the stands on a one game suspension.
Stimson also sees Barry Fuller miss out as the midfeilder faces the possibility of a had a operation to repair two fractures in his fingers.
The Cog:
Sitting just off of the main striker in supporter Miller could prove to be a threat to the heart of the Swansea defence.. |
Swansea's injury crisis has eased in the last few days with the return of defender Marcos Painter after finally shaking off a re-occurring hamstring injury. Whilst Paul Anderson got 10 minutes under his belt against Carlisle United on Tuesday after his lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring problem.
Midfielder Andrea Orlandi is back in contention after featuring in the reserves last night.
Captain Garry Monk is boosted with the news that he could feature against Yeovil as he looks set to shake of a back injury that has hampered his participation in the run in. Monk has also returned to training ahead of the clash with Gillingham. Dutchman Ferrie Bodde is still recovering from a groin strain but should be back in contention before the seasons end.
league one's top shot:
Jason Scotland has far surpassed his billing and with 29 goals to his name so far this season, with 4 games to go who would bet against him hitting the 30 goal mark and beyond. The world cup star and Trinidad And Tobago's talisman striker has proved critics wrong to fire Swansea within a win of promotion to the promised land of the allusive Championship . Scotland is firmly a contender for player of the season. |
