Martinez:We Don't Need To Strengthen

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez says he is willing to call on his youngsters if he needs to this season.

The Spaniard signed just one player in the January transfer window, bringing in Manchester United striker Febian Brandy on loan.

Despite the hopes from some fans of further signings, Martinez has stressed that he doesn't need to strengthen his squad, he told the Evening Post:

'We don't need to strengthen because the strength is within the squad,'

'We have four outstanding wingers, but Leon Britton can play in that position so that's five.

'Then we have young players in the squad. Shaun MacDonald has got stronger and stronger every day after five months' hard work and now he's ready for action.

'Then there's Chris Jones who could also have a chance, so I'm looking into my squad first and foremost.

'It's a possibility we could go into the loan market further down the line, but I'm looking at my squad to cover that gap for now.

'We have so many games and I know you need to be fresh in the wide areas to make a difference in one-v-one situations, but I believe we have the players to do that.'

'As soon as you get an injury or suspension some people start talking about signing somebody else, but we don't work like that,'

'We have the squad to cope.'

The defence in particular has been the main concern amongst the fans to strengthen. Martinez has Alan Tate, Kevin Amankwaah and Kevin Austin as defensive back-ups, although many will agree that Austin or Amankwaah aren't up to standard.

I would have liked a CB to have come in, but probably nothing better than what we have. Tate can play in that position. We have until the end of March should a loan be needed.

With our league position i think Martienz knows higher level clubs will want thier "bench warmers" playing, and Swansea is an ideal club for them to come to.

We wouldn't be top of the league if our boys hadn't been performing! Not essential to make any changes now but summer there is definately a need! RM will work his magic then!
