Britton: Officials Didn't Protect Us

The officials did not protect us was the message from Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton following the 1-1 draw in the 3rd round of the FA Cup against Blue Square South side Havant and Waterlooville.

The game was marred by controversy after a potentially carrer ending challenge by Hawks midfielder Brett Poate on Andrea Orlandi.

In the fracas that followed Swansea City saw captain Alan Tate Sent off for violent conduct after he was adjudged to have thrown a punch at a Hawks player. Despite this under fire referee Stuart Atwell failed to see Shaun Wilkinson throw Darryl Duffy to the floor.

Britton who saw an effort hit the bar in the first half was left under no illusions that the officials did not protect the Swansea players which has left Marcos Painter with a injured ankle.

Despite this the diminutive midfielder is still remaining positive as the Liberty Stadium outfit still remain in the FA Cup.

The result led to Roberto Martinez locking his players in the dressing room following the game

Britton Told The Evening Post

'''We weren't surprised by how physical they were.Non-league teams are going to come here and want to show us that they are ready for the game and to do that they will get stuck in."

'There might be some bad blood when we go down there after what went on, but we have got to be professional and rise above all that."

'We don't want to get involved in kicking people or getting stuck in because that's not the way we play. We get the ball down and beat teams by passing it around and we will not change that philosophy.''

'He didn't protect us very well and he didn't have the best of days all round.''.

It's disappointing that we didn't put the tie to bed long before they got their equaliser,'' Britton said.

'But we're still in the FA Cup and, while it's going to be difficult, we have to go to Havant & Waterlooville midweek and get a result."

'We've been to Billericay and Horsham already this season so we know what it will be about.''

Havent and Waterlooville made some ridiculous challenges and Leon is right the officials did very little to protect them, if it had happened on the street some of them would have been arrested.
