After the postponement of another fixture Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has signalled a need for a break in the fixture schedule in the winter.
In what would have been a scintillating fixture at Brunton Park , Officials had called the game off after efforts to defrost the pitch at the Cumbrian club were in vain.
Grounds staff had installed heaters and put covers in place in a last ditch effort to get the game to go ahead.
As Fixtures continue to pile up in the new year Roberto Martinez wants the Footballing authorities in the United Kingdom to implement a break in the winter months.
There is such precedent for leagues putting in place breaks in the fixture list. Russia's Premier League runs from the months of March to November and major European leagues take a break over the festive period.
Football assosiations in Italy the Liga Calcio postpone the Italian leauge Serie A&B over Christmas. Whilst their German counterparts The DFB also follow their example and suspend the Bundesliga over the new year.
Martinez is not alone in his desire for a winter break to be put in place. Manchester City Manager Sven Goran Eriksson is a great activist in lobbying the FA for a break for players.
Martinez told the Evening Post:
| 'A break around this period would be a positive thing.' I was a player for many years and experienced having a winter break and not having a break. I played with a break in Spain, without one in England and with both systems in Scotland.' I can say it's definitely positive for everyone, both supporters and players, to have a chance to recharge their batteries and to spend some time with their families.' It's productive for them and it would also stop a lot of games being called off, because I'm sure that our trip to Carlisle won't be the only one over the Christmas period.' I'm only talking about taking one Saturday off, but that would give everyone 14 days to have a breather.' |
