Martinez In Search For Local Talent

Martinez In Search For Local Talent

While there a talks amongst UEFA and FIFA regarding the lack of English players in the Premiership, Martinez insists they are always looking for local Welsh talent.

The Spaniard has added a number of Europeans to his squad this season, including Ferrie Bodde and Dorus De Vries (Holland), Andrea Orlandi, Angel Rangel and Guillem Bauza (Spain).

Roberto has only fielded 2 Welsh players this season in the League, Kristian O'Leary and Joe Allen.

The other Welsh players in the squad are Matty Collins, Shaun MacDonald and Owain Tudur-Jones.

Despite the lack of home-grown players here, the Swansea boss insists they are always looking for local talent:

He told the Western Mail:

"In the short term we want to win football matches," said

"But in the long term we want a philosophy of playing the game in the right way and that`s what we`re doing, with local talent in our youth system at the moment.

"It will take time but we do have some exciting Welsh talent in the first team; obviously we would like more.

"On the face of it people will look at the game the other week and say we have no Welsh players but what they do not realise is the work going on behind the scenes to develop our youngsters.

"We are also scouting the Welsh Premier and around the local area on a weekly basis to look for talent.

"We want as many Welshmen as possible because we know how important it is to a club to have local players."

Incidentally, Kenny Jackett was the first manager in 84 years to field a non-Welsh Swansea City side in 2004.
