Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has given Dutch keeper Dorus De Vries a full vote of confidence despite his error that handed Horsham the lead in the FA Cup 2nd round replay.
Unwavering in form De Vries has been one of clubs signings of the Summer following interest from Premiership side Wigan Athletic. So much so the keeper has become one of the first names on Martinez's team sheet.
The former Ado Den Hagg player handed Horsham a surprise lead after a lapse of concentration. The keeper hashed his clearance which set up Horsham Striker Lee Farrell for his second goal of the game.
Farrell picked up De Vries's hashed clearance midway in the Swansea half and coolly slotted the ball past the stranded keeper.
Despite the scare De Vries's blushes were spared as Swansea turned on the style to run out 6-2 winners.
Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has been quick to rally behind his charge.
Martinez was adamant that De Vries's character will be an underlying factor and the error will not play on his mind.
He Told:
The Evening Post
| Football is a game of errors..all the best players in the world make them - that's the nature of the game.' What I look at is the reaction after that, and the way Dorus performed after the goal on Monday was very pleasing.' He kept coming out for crosses, he dictated things and he got on the ball again.' He didn't walk away from his responsibilities and he didn't hide, he just carried on with his job and I was happy with that.' I know Dorus will not be thinking about what happened when we play Southend.' He is a strong character and the reaction we saw from him on Monday tells you straightaway that he's going to make sure something like this never happens again.' |
