Rovers Fans Asked To Pitch In

Club officials from Bristol Rovers called upon supporters of the club to help ensure the Memorial Stadium pitch will not claim its second casualty in Swansea City.

Rovers clash with Cheltenham on Wednesday was called of due to the pitch being waterlogged. Director of football Lennie Lawrence has been sceptical of the match going ahead only giving it a 50/50 chance of going ahead.

This has led to a call from the club to supporters to pitch in and volunteer to help the ground staff to make sure the game goes ahead.

Stadium Manager Ian Holtby is has expressed concerns about the weather conditions expected this afternoon.

He spoke on :
Bristol Rovers Official site

''At the moment the pitch is dry and the covers are in place,' 'But the forecast overnight and tomorrow isn't good, and we're expecting significant rainfall between now and when the game is scheduled to take place.'

As a result, we need to keep the covers over the pitch until as late as possible, so that if the heavens do open, the pitch is exposed for the minimal amount of time before kick-off.'

We've spoken to the contractors who have supplied the covers, and they have advised us that with about 20 people, they can be taken off the pitch in 20 to 30 minutes. So we're looking for that many people to come and lend a hand, to help make sure the game stays on.'

If we don't have that many people, then it will take longer which means we'll have to start earlier, and that means the pitch could be exposed to the rain for longer. Our fans have always been superb when we've asked for help like this before, and hopefully they'll come good for us again.'
