Roberto Martinez in his pre match comments insisted confidence was vital if Swansea City were improve on what have been described by some as lacklustre performances at home.
Confidence oozed from every Swansea player as the Liberty Stadium based outfit notched up 3 goals a for the first time at home since the 3-2 win over Millwall in the 1st round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 1st round in September.
In recent weeks Jason Scotland has come under pressure for his poor performances but it was his 16 minute strike that broke the deadlock. The Trinidad volleyed the ball right into the roof of the net after connecting with a Leon Britton cross.
Within minutes Swansea went 2-0 ahead when Scotland turned provider.
The Striker pulled back the into the danger area which Darren Pratley slotted home from 18 yards.
Stuart Gray's Northampton Town were left shell shocked and had no answer to the Swansea onslaught.
On 66 minutes Northampton's evening went from bad to worse when Guy Branston impeded Dennis Lawrence of a goal scoring opportunity.
Referee Stuart Cook had no hesitation to point to the spot.Up stepped Jason Scotland to bury the spot kick past Mark Bunn in the cobblers goal.
The game finished 3-0 and secured all three points for Martinez's side as Swansea go two points clear at the top of league.
Martinez after the game heaped praise on his players but was cautious that this form must be replicated week in week out.
Martinez spoke to
The Evening Post
| 'It's pleasing to win well in front of our own fans because that's the best way to repay our fans for their support.' We have not been able to do it as often as we would have liked, but we've set the standards now and we need to carry on from here.' We started against Northampton with the right attitude, desire and a willingness to work.' That gave us a platform to show the talent we have in the squad.' |
| 'It was a very disappointing evening for us and our performance was simply not acceptable in any way, shape or form.' We started OK but we then conceded two very poor goals in quick succession. I was very disappointed in the manner in which we conceded the goals and at the moment we are getting punished for every little mistake we make.' Swansea's players were all hungry for the ball and we ended up chasing shadows. None of our players really come out of this game with any credit apart from perhaps Mark Bunn who made some great saves. |
