Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has unleashed a wave of criticism against both Sky Sports and Referee Kevin Friend after the the 1-1 draw against Ryaman Premier Division outfit Horsham in the 2nd round of the FA Cup.
As torrential rain lashed down on the Queen's Street pitch Horsham Ground staff were seen frantically trying to make the playing surface playable. Prior to the game concerns were raised by Swansea City that the conditions were poor.
In such harsh conditions Roberto Martinez has criticised Sky Sports and Officials for allowing the game to go ahead and has cited the decision as dangerous.
Claims that Sky Sports pushed the Ryman League Side to proceed with the game have been levelled against the broadcaster by Swansea City.
Club Captain Garry Monk has also claimed that two of Horsham's strikers had asked for the game to be called off.
Martinez further continued his condemnation of Referee Kevin Friend stating the official buckled under the weight of the pressure of the game.
That criticism came after the referee awarded a 85th minute penalty as defender Alan Tate was adjudged to have made a rash challenge on Lee Farrell.A penalty was immediately awarded to the home side which Lewis Taylor converted.
Martinez told
The Western Mail
| '"If the game wasn`t on Sky Sports, it would have been called off.' "I`ve never been involved in a football game in such bad conditions. The concern of playing in such treacherous conditions is that it`s easier for players to pick up serious injuries. The conditions were dangerous.' If their penalty was not on live TV, in the 85th minute of an FA Cup tie and for a non-league team against a league team, then he`d never have given it - there was no contact.' It`s pointless speaking to the ref afterwards but it is annoying when everyone is pushing for the upset, we were playing the worst role possible in the occasion.' The penalty decision was a disgrace but all part of the occasion.' The whole programme was about Horsham, we were in a no-win situation and we knew it. It is disappointing to be treated like that.' |
