Swansea kept the pressure up on fellow promotion chasers with a hard fought win over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park yesterday afternoon.
In an end to end game both sides failed to convert until the 82nd minute when former Tranmere midfielder Andy Robinson picked the ball up on the left flank. Robinson unleashed a well weighted cross only to see it turned in by Rovers midfielder Steven Jennings at close range.
Swansea had the chance to double their lead after a Bauza shot was well saved by Danny Coyne in the Rovers goal.
The home side pressed for an equalising goal and their chance came in the last minute of time added on when substitute Shane Sherriff saw his shot go wide.
Swans manager Roberto Martinez highlighted a few months ago that results would have to be gridded out. This certainly was in the Spaniards mind when talking to reporters after the game.
Martinez spoke to
The Western Mail
| 'It`s vital that we can get these tough results.' You can play pretty football and still end up in mid-table.' But if you want to compete for something better you have to get results at places like this. You need to do that if you are to succeed at this level.' I`m very pleased to get a win again. Make no mistake about it, Prenton Park is one of the hardest places to come to and get three points." |
| 'I don't think we deserved to lose the game. I'm frustrated with the goal we've conceded, but we've got to take our chances when they come. It puts too much pressure on the back four. I'm really gutted as I don't believe we deserved to lose.' We have had chances and someone has to take them. That's the way you win games and it takes the pressure off the back four. Greenacre had a great chance to score and Goodison had an even better one.' Too many crosses are coming into our box. We need to work hard on that.' I don't think any blame can be attached to what they did today.' |
