Liberty Drugs Tests Anger Fans

On the spot drugs tests at the Liberty Stadium have been slammed by Swansea City supporters. South Wales Police started taking samples from Supporters in the East Stand after evidence of drugs taking was found.

Police were alerted to the evidence of drug taking by cleaners in toilets in the East Stand. Stadium officials and the Police worked in partnership to run the operation.

Testing was carried out on Friday evening by specialist units with itemiser machines which can detect traces of Cocaine, cannabis and other illegal substances.

The tests have angered many fans and has caused deep concern amongst supporters over the legality of such tests.

Chief Inspector Keith Bowman has defended the robust action by his force and has outlined that the operation was a success.

Mr Bowman told The Evening Post

"We work closely with the stadium and ran this operation following intelligence given to us. Stewards and cleaners have reported concerns, especially about toilets in the East Stand, over recent weeks."

We had five positive hits from the operation, and one person was found in possession of a small quantity of what we believe to be cocaine."

Liberty UK the civil liberties protection group have severely criticised these drugs tests.

Liberty UK's Statement regarding On The Spot Drugs Tests:

"This is an extremely questionable use of police powers. The police cannot force someone who is not under arrest to take a drug test but they are implying they can. To then use a perfectly legitimate refusal to comply as part of the justification for suspicion is an abuse of policing powers."

The Club have yet to issue a statement regarding the police operation.

Thats outrageous, but i guess something like this was gonna happen sooner or later, i just hope(not that ive anything to hide!!!)but just hope that this doesnt catch on in every stadium

Unless there is definite proof of people taking drugs inside the ground, then this is diabolical and should not be allowed to happen. I've never taken drugs and would have nothing to hide, but hell would freeze over first before they got anywhere near me for a sample. Don't stand for it.
