Martinez Defends Team Changes

Swansea City boss Roberto Martinez defended his decision to make 6 changes to his side for the FA Cup first round match at Billericay on Saturday.

Like his friend and fellow Spaniard Rafa Benitez, Roberto made a number of changes for the Cup game, though 2 of them he had to make because of injuries and suspension.

When reading the team line-up for the game, I had thought he got it about right. Resting key players for Friday's crucial league game and giving opportunities to those who haven't played too often so far this year.

Guillem Bauza started alongside Darryl Duffy and he impressed, scoring both our goals to help us progress through to the next round.

Alan Tate was also giving an opportunity to try to impress as he hopes to gain a regular first team place as a centre back.

Roberto Martinez explained his decisions and said:

'I wasn't worried that I made too many changes, I've got a very reliable squad and that's the reason why we put that squad together.

'If you look at our fixture list, we played Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday and now we play again on Tuesday and then Friday.

'It's not making changes, those are the commitments the squad has to face and I've got huge confidence that anyone can step in and do a job. Even when we went behind we didn't panic; we showed huge determination, belief and ability.

'We've shown that many times in the league and that's something you need if you're going to be successful.

'They played a fantastic role and all the credit should go to them,'

Martinez is getting things just about right in terms of giving every player opportunities, maybe barring one or two like Matty Collins and Kevin Amankwaah who can't even get on the bench for Johnstone's Paint Trophy games.

Though having said that, Collins is now enjoying first team football on loan at fellow Welsh side Wrexham.
