Roberto Martinez described the fans' abuse as 'like pressing the self-destruct button'.
|'You expect your players to get a bit of stick from the away fans, but not your own supporters,'' |
'It's like pressing the self destruct button.
'I've spoken to Marcos about it. He's a committed young player who works extremely hard for the club and he was obviously upset by it.
'I could see something was wrong from the touchline. He lost possession of four balls at the end and that's not like Marcos at all.
'He knows he shouldn't let it affect his game and cause him to lose focus, but he'll learn from the experience and he'll become a more mature player for it. He knows he's got to answer people like that with his feet.
'It still doesn't make it any easier though. We need to create an environment at the Liberty that is difficult for the opposition, not our own players.
'It's disappointing, but we shouldn't lose focus of the whole thing. As a club we are extremely lucky because we've got fantastic support. We've got the best fans in Britain; very passionate and one individual's behaviour won't detract from that fact.''
And while he should to ignore the abuse, it's always difficult to keep your concentrations high when you continually have someone knocking you down whenever you have the ball.
The performances at home lately have been poor and disappointing but this kind of disgraceful behaviour isn't helping anyone.
