'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martinez: 'Not Up To Standard'

Swansea City boss Roberto Martinez says his side's performance today was not up to the standard we set at the start of the season.

Just over 11,000 fans were left frustrated yet again following a lackluster performance from the Swans as we drew 0-0 at home to Brighton.

Martinez said:

'The performance was not up to the standards we set early on in the season,''

'It was frustrating, disappointing and not good enough at times.

'I thought we created enough chances in the second-half to win the game, but we tended to force it too much. Perhaps the players let their hearts rule their heads because they wanted to win the game so much for the fans.

'You get strange days in football sometimes and, with the early kick-off, perhaps this was one of them.

'Swansea City are expected to win every game - and our targets have not changed - but no team in the world plays fantastically well for the entire 90 minutes.

'But I thought we finished well and hopefully we will give the fans plenty to cheer against Swindon at the Liberty on Tuesday.

'The season is a marathon and we will get better.''

Brighton boss Dean Wilkins complimented Swansea's start to the game, saying we were 'unplayable' in the first 20 minutes.

I honestly thought Brighton were the better side in the first half and forced De Vries into making some excellent saves early on.

Wilkins thought his side controlled the first half:

'I think that in the first half we had control of the game and got into some good situations,'

'What we do need to improve on is our finishing.

'Swansea got booed off at half-time, so we knew that the second half would be played at a higher tempo. And, to be fair, for the first 20 minutes Swansea were almost unplayable. Some of their movement and the quality of their play was fantastic.

'The thing that pleased me more than anything was our determination to hang on to what we had got, and I think that is where we have to come out of the game with an awful lot of credit.

'It was real heroic stuff at times in defence and the players really need to be commended about that.'

After two good performances at the start of the season against Oldham and then Nottingham Forest, the Swans are currently a long way off from matching that quality we set early on.

Whilst we outplayed those two teams, we're struggling to beat teams as of late and our quality in the last third and in the box just isn't good enough.

The fans are getting more and more frustrated each week and I'm sure today's poor display will affect Tuesday's night attendance in a negative way as we face Swindon Town.

Are you confident the Swans can improve?
