Martinez Praises Captain Monk

Roberto Martinez has heralded the return of Garry Monk and has touted that better things are to come from the injury stricken defender.

Monk had been sidelined from competitive action due to a knee injury sustained a pre season game against Stormvogels Telstar in July.

by Jack Hammers
"I think he feels as if he has got a point to prove ".
The Bedford born defender made his return to competitive first team action ; the first in over a year against Walsall at the Liberty Stadium in the Carling Cup 1st Round. Monk has started to repay the faith shown by Martinez at the start of the campaign with two good displays.

Monk had a solid game vs Walsall and was composed and collected at the back against Nottingham Forest.

The later against The Reds earned the defender the Man Of The Match award.

Roberto Martinez
Spoke to The Evening Post

'Garry came through the Forest game really well and that's a huge positive for us.'

To have someone with his leadership qualities and organisational skills is a bonus for the other players, and I've no doubt he can go on and get back to his very best now.

These days there are no injuries that can really set you back that much. With a lot of hard work in the gym, you can get the structure of the knee as it was before and sometimes even stronger.'

But we have always been aware that Garry was on his way back and we know the strengths he has.'

The possible resurgence of form by the 28 year old defender comes not a moment too soon for Martinez.Whilst he has secured some vital signings in the transfer window there was a concern that the defense had been compromised by the departures of Iriekpen and Williams.

It may seem early days but if Monk can continue in the same form all season without injury good things may come from him.

What do you think of Monk's resurgence to form can it last?

Despite thinking he was poor (thats putting it lightly) 2 seasons ago, he was our best defender on Saturday. Distribution always lets him down though and its only 1 game, yet to be convinced he can do a consistent job there this season. I don't think lawrence can either.
