Monk Returns To First Team Action

Monk Returns To First Team Action

Swansea City defender Garry Monk has handed Roberto Martinez a boost ahead of the Carling Cup First Round tie vs Walsall tonight.

The Defender has been out of competitive action since tearing his cruciate ligaments against Scunthorpe United on the 8th August 2006. Monk had featured in pre season freindlies but picked an additional injury to his ankle.

Initially it was thought that the injury would take a month to heal but further tests showed that he would return in two weeks.

Monk last season had been playing with the reserves whilst recovered from his injury problems.

Garry Monk On his return to Competitive action The Evening Post:

''I know a few people will be thinking the injury will have an effect on me.'

I've heard people saying that and I'm looking forward to proving them wrong.

I believe in myself and I want to show that I can still do the job.

Hopefully I'll be involved from the start against Walsall and then I'll go on from there.

I want to play in as many games because I think I will get better with each one.'

Whilst Monk is preparing for a return to action Swansea City Manager Roberto Martinez is looking not to be knocked out of the Carling Cup in the first round.

Martinez Told The Evening Post:

''I suppose the record can be partly explained by different managers' thinking over the years.'

Perhaps you can take your eye off the competition because a club like us are unlikely to win the Carling Cup, or because you have a few problems in a small squad.

But we have a big, strong squad to choose from so I'm looking to change that statistic.

Of course nothing is more important than league points, but every time we play there is huge expectation and we want to win the game.'

Martinez and Monk have their work cut out for them tonight against Walsall. It is good to see Monk come back into the fray and will give us options at the back.

Allthough i don't think that Monk is our best defender i think he is better than Tate in a CB position. He makes less rash tackles. This is another opertunity for our back 4 to gell and hopefully for Big Den and Monk to strike up a partnership that works!
