Monk Pens New Deal At Swansea

Club captain Garry Monk has today signed a new one-year contract with Swansea City.

The deal keeps him at the club until June 2008 with the option of a further year providing he plays 25 competitive first team games.

Although his agent received enquiries from other interested clubs, Monk says he was only interested in signing for the Swans, he told the Official Site:

'I'm absolutely delighted it's all finalised,''

'It's been a long process, but with so many players out of contract it was always going to take time. It was just a case of being patient.''

'I've said all along that I only wanted to sign for Swansea. It's a great club; I love being here and all that goes with it.

'While my agent had to do his job and see what else was out there just in case, it never crossed my mind to go anywhere else.

Negotiations between Monk and the club over his new deal took a number of weeks. His career-threatening injury last season may have had been a factor in the club's decision to offer him certain terms.

Martinez issused a deadline day for all out of contract players to report back with their decisions. Akinfenwa and Iriekpen rejected new deals while Watt joined Monk to sign new terms. The Swans are currently waiting on Kristian O'Leary who's been more time to decide as he's currently out of the country.
