Jenkins Reaction To Contract Talks

Swansea City Chairman Huw Jenkins has launched a defense of the way in which the contract extensions were carried out.

In recent weeks both the Board and Martinez have come under increased criticism by the out of contract players regarding the lack of negotiation on the 1 year deals offered.

Izzy Iriekpen had sensationally hit out at the club citing the contracts offered an 'insult.'

It also seemed that the players cited lack of negotiation on those contracts as a prime stumbling block over accepting the 1 year deals offered.

Former Swansea City Striker Adebayo Akinfenwa also has been outspoken about the problems in recent weeks and cited in the South Wales Evening Post that the club had not met him halfway in regards to any form of Negotiation.

Chairman Huw Jenkins
told the Western Mail:

'I'm not disappointed at all by any comments made, myself and Roberto felt we dealt with the negotiations in a fair manner and had put the correct deals to the players.

If the players and their agents decide to look for better terms elsewhere, then that is quite within their rights and no one is going to criticise them for that.'

The Boards position is understandable with all the out of contract players having major question marks over injury , disciplinary problems or lack of match time.Any offers given therefore should have reflected that.

The Board will have worked out their budget for season 2007/2008. They have also allowed for funds to strengthen certain positions. To improve offers to Izzy & Bayo would have reduced the money pot available for new players. Austin & Watt were given contracts with no negotiations, and they have accepted. The club is existing by watching expenditure and by doing so will continue in business. We do not want our club to go bust.

Willow...I agree that we survive by watching expenditure. However, we need to replace those players which is going to cost us money in the first place plus offering those new players deals, I can't see how we stand to gain from this. Terrible by the board if you ask me.
