Whelpdale Signing Unlikely

Chances of signing Chris Whelpdale now look unlikely as Peterborough United are close to completing a move for the Billericay winger.

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez revealed he was one of many targets a month ago but denied they had an officoal approach to sign him.

The 20 year-old is currently playing in the Ryman League, two levels below the Conference but he is an and coming star, and it's no surprise that a number of clubs have shown an interest.

He has lots of pace and his comfortable playing on either wing. This season he won the Supporters' Player of the Year award.

He is soon expected to sign a 4-year deal with the League Two club.

Billericay boss Matt Jones said:

'Chris is a wonderful talent who can play in a variety of positions and full deserves his chance to move up.

'At the moment it looks like he'll go to Peterborough, who have offered him a four-year deal, which is very unusual for a non-league player.

'At the moment they have made the best offer for Chris and Billericay, and all he and ourselves would love now is for him to say farewell by us winning today.'

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said:

'Chris Whelpdale is an exciting young player who has been watched by several clubs, but I believe he will certainly be joining us.

'I've seen him a couple of times and he's very quick and very skilful. He's one we hope to confirm as our player very soon, but there are one or two things to sort out with the others.

'I want a squad of 22 players with competition and cover for all 11 first-team places.'
