Mesa Jets Off For Loan, Are We Going To Sign Anyone!?
Swansea City midfielder Roque Mesa looks set to join Sevilla on loan until the end of the season, while we are still waiting for our first, much-needed signing of the January transfer window.
Carlos Carvalhal recently told the press that we can still avoid relegation without any new signings this month, and while his team did beat Liverpool at home recently to prove he could prove to be right, we should still be looking to bring in two quality players at the very least to boost our chances.
The alarm bells started ringing when our head coach came out with those comments, it was almost as if the excuses were being prepared early, as it's looking like we might head into February with no new recruits.
What's worse is that Roque Mesa, who was bought in the Summer for £11m, is set to complete a loan move to La Liga side Sevilla. He will join the likes of £16m signing Borja Baston, Jordi Amat (£2.5m) and Jefferson Montero (£4.5m) out on loan in Spain's top division.
That's £34m of signings that are now out on loan because it hasn't worked out for them - for various reasons - at the Liberty Stadium.
The Swans have had their troubles during this window. Nobody wants to join a side struggling at the foot of the Premier League. An excuse that is simply answered with the fact that we should have built a better squad in the Summer. We had funds from the sales of our two best players - Sigurdsson and Llorente, and we all knew that regardless of our league position, it would be difficult for a club like us to do business in an inflated January transfer market.
Our recruitment over the last few years has been a shambles, to say the least. There's been far too much money spent on players who have flopped - to say the least. Yes, not all players come in and prove to be effective, but there are far too many examples. If you were to compile a list of signings that have flopped and those that haven't, you know which list would be bigger.
Our recruitment has also seemingly become lazier and lazier too. We're still looking at ex-players, a goalkeeper or two and youngsters at Falkirk. You can find the articles on all these if you do a google search. Then there's our pointless attempts at trying to bring back Andre Ayew with a failed £14m bid. It was rejected but it was also reported that the player didn't want to return, something none of us I'm sure found surprising.
But going back to Mesa's expected loan move. It's frustrating to see what was another initially exciting signing to not be given much of a first-team chance, before being loaned out. Is it the wisest decision? Surely he could be used as a backup option. He's no worse than Fer or Carroll, or even Ki. What happens if one or two of them get injured?
Mesa is also second in our man of the match leaderboard with 4 poll wins, and to let him leave given the position we're in is another strange decision from the club.
