Carvalhal Sees The Positives After Notts County FA Cup Draw

Swansea City boss Carlos Carvalhal focused on the positives despite watching his side fail to progress in the FA Cup at League 2 side Notts County.

Luciano Narsingh opened the scoring after 32 minutes when substitute Ki Sung Yueng broke into the penalty area before picking out the winger who steered the ball home.

The Swans dominated the game with 74% possession but didn't do anywhere near enough with the ball in the final third to win the tie. We had 9 shots on target, but a number of these were tame efforts from distance, while Notts County grew into the game in the second half and scored a deserved equaliser just after the hour mark.

The hosts had two or three decent chances early in the second half, and the equaliser was always likely to come. The ball might have been just out of play as the cross came in, but the Swansea defence were too busy appealing, as the ball came across the 6-yard area and Stead could easily finish from 3 yards.

Carvalhal said:

"After the first ten to 15 minutes we started to control the game," he said. "We created chances and took the lead against a side that defended very well and in numbers.

"We were prepared for that and we were in total control.

"In the second half we must give credit to Notts County. They played more long balls and were more physical.

"They scored and they deserved it during that period.

"After that, it was just Swansea on the pitch moving the ball.

"They were compact but we created two clear chances to finish the game.

'The negative was not winning the game, but there are lots of positives about this game.

"We are still fighting in this competition. We have another chance to get to the next stage of the competition.'

The second half performance was particularly uninspiring, we moved the ball far too slowly to try and get through a defensive Notts County. The strike duo of Tammy Abraham and Wilfried Bony never really got into the game, as they were both dropping far too deep and were never committed to making runs into the box. Crosses were coming in, shots were being parried but neither of them were anywhere near the ball to take advantage.

But at least we weren't embarrassed and defeated. We should get the job done in the replay, but Notts County deserves credit for their approach to the game and getting back into it with a battling second-half display.
