Carvalhal: 'Players Have Played Exactly As I Wanted'

Swansea City boss Carlos Carvalhal told the press this week that his players have 'played exactly as I wanted in that moment' as he looks to implement his own philosophy within the team.

So far, the Portuguese has managed 3 games, each with different results. He got a Premier League win away at Watford in his first game in charge, followed by a 2-0 home defeat against Spurs before a goalless draw Wolves in the FA Cup third round.

Talking ahead of Saturday's key game away at Newcastle United, Carvalhal said:

"Maybe I cannot make them play with my philosophy yet, but have we played the way I want to play in this moment? Yes," Carvalhal said.

"In all three games, the players have played exactly as I wanted in that moment.

"The most important thing right now is that we are competitive in every game and we have been so far.

"At Newcastle we will try to use all the good things we have at the moment and we will try to hide the weaknesses we have."


The Swans have probably played rather well in only one of those three games - the defeat against Spurs. The first half was difficult and very defensive, but we showed some attacking intent in the second half and were unlucky to lose after some poor officiating. The Watford performance, despite the win, was uninspiring barring a late 5-minute spell that saw us score twice to win.

Carvalhal has been boosted with the returns of Ki, Britton and Bartley who are all back in action or in training. Bony also started at Wolves and should be fit to start at St James' Park.

Talking about the opposition, Carvalhal added:

"They are a good side with good players and good organisation, and they will have a good crowd behind them,"

"It`s not a decisive game for us, but of course it`s a very important game. All the games are important for us now.

"We will try our best to make sure we can win the game. We will always fight for three points - we don`t go anywhere to try to draw.

"We have respect for the quality they have, but we will fight for the win. Let`s see what happens at the end."
