Swansea City Sack Head Coach Paul Clement

Swansea City Sack Head Coach Paul Clement

Swansea City have sacked head coach Paul Clement after a run of 10 games and only one win that sees us rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

The club have moved to sack Clement ahead of Saturday's huge home game against Crystal Palace, and following the recent 3-1 defeat at Everton.

It was a decision that the club simply had to make as we were going absolutely nowhere under his leadership. But whilst the squad is severely lacking Premier League quality - there's still more to get out of the team. We've been far too negative, with Clement seemingly primarily focused on the defence, leaving little to no attention on the attacking side of the game.

His negativity and tactical decisions this season has been his downfall, and you feel that his last season heroics of keeping us up have delayed his sacking, as this was something that could have happened after our home loss against Brighton. Since that game, we have lost another 5, drawn 1 and won 1.

Clement deserved praise for his achievements last season, as were in a very similar position when he came in at the start of 2017, but he has struggled to make things work in in the current campaign. Having settled on an established starting eleven that helped to keep us up, he has found it difficult this year to settle on his strongest team, making 2-4 team changes most weeks, as well as switching between formation systems.

Chairman Huw Jenkins also said in a club statement that they are 'surprised and disappointed it hasn`t worked out this season'. How can they be that surprised when they sold our two best players in the Summer and didn't replace them!? We just about stayed up last year with our two best players playing for us, so what exactly did he expect!?

"To change the manager, especially at only the halfway point of the season, is the last thing we wanted to do as a club.

"We had three different managers last season and as a result we all wanted to give Paul as much time as possible to turn things around.

"But we felt we couldn`t leave it any longer and needed to make a change to give us the best chance of an uplift and a turnaround in fortunes with the club bottom of the Premier League.

"Paul has been at the club for 12 months and what he achieved in the second half of last season to keep us in the top flight was a tremendous feat. For that, and his effort and commitment this season, it goes without saying that the club thanks him for his work, together with Nigel (Gibbs) and Karl (Halabi).

"I have had an excellent working relationship with Paul and we are all, including the owners, surprised and disappointed it hasn`t worked out this season.

"We wish Paul every success in his career going forward.``

The club also confirmed that they will 'give supporters a further update regarding their replacements within the next 24 hours.'

Tony Pulis is the current front-runner for the job according to the bookmakers, while assistant manager and club legend Leon Britton has also been tipped for the position, but surely we'd be better off looking elsewhere? Pulis would be no improvement whatsoever as he too would focus on the defence, while Leon Britton is still very much inexperienced.

It's a sacking that could have happened after the woeful performance in the home defeat against Brighton in early November, and there was speculation that the club had been looking at alternatives, so surely it shouldn't take too long to bring in a replacement.

The reality is this though - this sacking is our fifth consecutive managerial sacking now in about 4 years or so - Michael Laudrup, Garry Monk, Francesco Guidolin, Bob Bradley and Paul Clement. The club are getting things so badly wrong and it simply comes down to the careless actions of Huw Jenkins and the rest of the former owners.

The only surprise was that they took so long to sack him. The constant changes he made to the teams he picked to the different systems he employed almost every game. It must have been very difficult for the players to understand what he wanted. On top of that the squad of players that are left are just not good enough to get us out of the mess we are in. Serious money must be made available to whoever takes over as manager, but even then we may not have enough points to stay up. The mismanagement of what was a stable club when we first arrived in the Premier League to what is now an utter shambles, is sad to behold. I fear that if we get relegated we will keep falling.

It comes as a relief Phil, not to see the same old rubbish on the pitch. We might lose against Palace but I'm hoping we at least show more effort and potential in the opposition's half. We should have sacked Clement ages ago, we've lost 5 after Brighton defeat which is when he should have gone. Clement gone, has to be Huw next.
