Clement Reveals Bartley's Qualities That Earned Him New Deal

Paul Clement has revealed the qualities he sees in defender Kyle Bartley which is what earned him a new four-year contract this week.

The news this week that the former Arsenal defender, who spent last season on loan working at Leeds United with former manager Garry Monk, split the Swans fans' opinions, with many questioning the club as to why we have given such a lengthy deal to a player who is still struggling to earn a regular first team place.

However, Paul Clement - in today's pre-match press conference, explained the defender's qualities, telling the media:

'I like Kyle, he has good leadership qualities,'

'He has come back with confidence after having a really good season on loan at Leeds.

'He brings another dynamic to the central defenders we have here. In many ways he is a typical British defender.

'He is dominant in both penalty areas, he is a strong man.

'He is English and has good communications with the group. He has character and personality and we are very pleased he has signed a new deal here.'

Garry Monk received criticism a few years ago for opting to use Kyle Bartley over Jordi Amat when he switched things up in defence in an attempt to improve results, but it appears that Clement also sees Bartley as the better backup option.

With Amat leaving to join Real Betis on a season-long loan, Bartley had to stay to offer a backup option, as it didn't look like we were going to sign a defender this summer - much to the frustration of many Swans fans.

Like Clement said, Bartley has come back after a full season of first team football at Championship side Leeds United, captaining the side too so his confidence will no doubt have been boosted.

He's got a new four-year deal, but you still feel that he's got to be breaking into the first team soon and challenging Federico Fernandez, whose position is arguably up for grabs more so than Alfie Mawson's.

Bettre than Mawson by miles. Alfie may develop but sometimes that is a luxury.

Bartley makes too many mistakes and goes missing, ball watching. Mawson is young but twice the player Bartley is.
