Clement Agrees - No Squad Overhaul Needed

Clement Agrees - No Squad Overhaul Needed

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement is in agreement with Huw Jenkins' claim that a squad overhaul is not needed this Summer.

Despite being in a relegation battle up until the penultimate game of the season and being managed by 3 different managers this season, both chairman Huw Jenkins and manager Paul Clement are in agreement that a 'major squad overhaul' isn't needed this Summer.

Clement has backed up these claims by looking at the number of points they achieved under him in the second half of the season. Looking at the table since the beginning of 2017, the Swans would be in 8th, so it does suggest that the quality is there for next season.

But having said that, there is still a severe lack of strength in depth within the squad. There's not sufficient back-up in defence for a start. Amat and van der Hoorn are nowhere near up to the job in the Premier League, while Clement will also give Kyle Bartley a chance to prove himself after his season-long loan spell at Leeds. But he too has also shown that he's not up to top flight standard.

Then there's the midfield, we don't have adequate wingers, as Clement later switched to a winger-less and narrow 4-4-2 diamond, that together with the return of Leon Britton, played a key role in our late surge of form to help us stay up.

Narsingh signed in January, but has struggled to earn a regular place in the team. Montero can't avoid injury and Routledge and Dyer appear to be over the hill. In the centre of midfield, are the likes of Leroy Fer and Ki both good enough?

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente both have to stay if the club are not considering many key signings this Summer.

Clement said:

"I don`t agree that an overhaul is needed. If the club had been relegated and only had another 12 points then that may be the case.

"But the players and team improved a lot and, if we win (against West Brom) on Sunday we could have 29 points from half a season.

"Even if it had been 20 in first half we would have had 49 points and we would have been eighth or ninth and nobody would say we would need an overhaul. So, for that reason, I agree with the chairman.

"I have been very happy with the squad and do not see a major overhaul is required. We want to strengthen but I don't see that with a lot of players. The players have played to their potential and if we can replicate that going forward we will be in a strong position."

"There will be lots of things discussed, things that are normal to be on the agenda. Staffing will be reviewed and things with facilities and potential recruitment coming in.

"We have been looking at potential players ever since we came in; we had to move quickly in January and we did some good business.

"We continue to monitor potential targets both in UK and abroad, but there are a lot of ifs and buts. It depends on offers or whether we want to move players on, or who we want to bring in. Nothing is certain until window shuts.

"But it will be a team effort. I work closely with the chairman, the owners, (transfer analyst) Dan Altman and (head of recruitment) Dave Leadbetter. My role is to decide where in the team we need to strengthen and I pretty much know that already."

Up front, Gomis could also return - rather than stay at Marseille, while a decision still needs to be made on the future of record signing flop Borja Baston.

Does Clement have enough options all over the pitch to avoid having to make a number of signings this Summer? Where can we realistically expect to finish next season? Let us know your thoughts in the article comments below...
