Clement Calls Spurs Defeat 'Heartbreaking'

Clement Calls Spurs Defeat 'Heartbreaking'

Swansea City were left utterly stunned at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night as Spurs came back very late on to win 3-1.

Clement's side had led the match for 77 minutes, from Routledge's opener in the 11th minute, but Alli started Spurs' late comeback in the 88th minute - before Son and Erikssen added to Swansea's misery.

Spurs may have dominated the game completely, at one point, second half possession read 85% in the title-chasers' favour, but as Clement says below - even at 1-1 - you've got to be hanging on for a point.

A Spurs goal was inevitable really, they were getting closer and closer and in the final ten minutes we really were hanging on, and their equalising goal saw a helpful deflection for them, as a low cross came off Mawson to help it into the path of Alli who simply had to tap it into the net.

Son then went through on goal to give them the lead, before Erikssen added insult to injury with a late goal as we pushed for an equaliser very late on.

Clement told the Official Site:

"That result is very tough to take, for me, for the players and for the fans,"

"We got off to a really good start. We scored a route-one goal with a ball over the top. (Jordan) Ayew did really well and produced some good skill to find Routledge.

"That gave us a lot of belief. We had to defend a lot tonight, but we did that very well against a very good, technical, offensive side.

"We had a fantastic chance with (Kyle) Naughton which deflected just wide, then on 88 minutes the equaliser comes.

"It was a little bit unfortunate - a cross-shot deflects off (Alfie) Mawson and goes right between (Fede) Fernandez and (Leroy) Fer.

"But at 1-1, you still have to try to get the draw.

'Heartbreaking'

"To come out of the game with nothing is pretty heartbreaking, really."

"We have to be encouraged by our performance for long periods of this game,"

"The players have put in a massive physical effort very soon after our last game, but we have to dust ourselves off and go again.
"We are professionals and we have to deal with hard times and go again.

"The players know the situation we are in. We are in the bottom three now and there are seven games to go.

"West Ham have had their own troubles recently and we have to go there and try to get a result.

"We need a result, certainly in the next two games, because the games are running out now."

Games are now going by and we're not picking up enough points, it's as simple as that. Failure to beat Middlesbrough at home last Sunday could be costly, but not only that, it's building even more needless pressure.

The Middlesbrough game was a perfect opportunity to help build some momentum going into the final run-in, but we just didn't take it - lets just hope our confidence and morale hasn't suffered after the late defeat to Spurs - because Saturday's trip to West Ham is huge. After that it's Watford away.
