Second Half Performance Pleases Monk

Second Half Performance Pleases Monk

Swansea City head coach Garry Monk was pleased with his side's 'dominant' second half performance in their 4-1 win against Aston Villa.

It wasn't the best of performances in the first half as Aston Villa cancelled out Bony's early opener before Shelvey scored a 50-yard wonder striker to put the hosts 2-1 in front at half time.

Villa struggled after the break though - surprisingly as they needed to start brightly in the hope of getting a second equaliser.

It never came, and the visitor's performance can be summed up by the away fans' chants of 'Lambert out'.

Monk said:

"It was a fantastic result for us.

"Four goals, a good team performance and good football.

"That`s what we wanted. We got the early goal but Villa came back and dominated. They put us on the back foot and could get our rhythm.

"It took a spectacular goal from Jonjo to give us back our confidence and that feeling of being back on top again.

"But there was only one team in it in the second half, we were totally dominant in every aspect.

"We`ve been in positions at half-time where we`ve been dominant and taken the lead, but then we`ve been punished.

"But we started the second half properly and there was some great passing, great movement and great goals in the end."

Monk also praised Shelvey for his strike and Bony for another two goals, he added:

"I know he wants to take this form into the World Cup and hit the ground running there.

"It`s been difficult given the season Michu`s had but Bony has stepped up to the plate and it`s a shame that we haven`t seen more of them as a pair together.

"You`d like to imagine that a fully-fit Michu and a fully-fit Bony would be a handful for any defence, that`s the only disappointing thing for me.

"But as far as Bony is concerned it`s not just his goals but the way he is.

"He`s a big character around the boys.

"He`s a leader, he works hard and his link-up play and his hold-up play is very good as well."

Talking of Shelvey:

"He`s come into the dressing room shouting 'Goal of the Season`. It was typical Jonjo,"

"He`s got that in the locker. People have been talking about his potential for years but it`s easy to forget he`s still only 21.

"But that goal was fantastic. He tries it in training and has the technique to pull it off.

"You can see the intent there so it was no fluke.

"He gave the goalkeeper no chance and only certain players have the
vision and ability to execute that.

"But what pleased me most was that it came at an important moment in the game."
