Laudrup: Should Have Won It, Could Have Lost It

Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup summed up today's game well, saying his side should have won, but also could have lost at home against Aston Villa.

The Swans looked like heading for a rout in the first half, but they missed a host of clear cut chances in the opening 15 minutes. Michu hit the post twice, Graham missed the target from 8 yards and Routledge also missed a great opportunity before his opener.

Aston Villa then scored a vital goal against the run of play, to help boost their confidence for the second half.

Laudrup said:

'We had a fantastic first half but there was only one problem - it was 1-1 at the break when we should have been 4-0 ahead inside 10 minutes.

'We created the chances, played so well in the first 40 minutes but did not score. We did not get that second goal which could have led to the third and the fourth.

'But we came back and showed character and scored in the last minute. The title you can give the game is 'we should have won it and could have lost it'.'

Talking about the second half, when they had to net an injury-time equaliser to claim a point, Laudrup talked again about his side's character:

"The second half was more even, we showed good character to come back and we've done that a lot this season.

"But it`s better to lose two points than three."

"The attitude and focus in the first half was great," he said. "It was our fourth game in ten days and I`ve been very pleased with what I have seen.

"But to have six points, and no defeats, is great for us."

Strange substitutions in this game. Instead of taking De Guzman off, an obviously tired Michu should have been replaced. Ki was completely ineffective yet again, so Augustien should have come on to bolster midfield. It was still 1-1 at that point and we could have gone onto control the game again. Instead much more pressure was put on Britton, who ran himself into a stand still trying to cover Ki. A great opportunity lost today.
