Martinez: It Was 2 Points Dropped vs Swansea City

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez said his side dropped two points against Swansea City yesterday.

"All I can say is if we finish above Wigan this year I feel we will still need to be above 2 more teams on that performance."

The former Swansea boss returned to the Liberty Stadium but he saw his Wigan team struggle in the opening 45 minutes, with the home team dominating with their impressive passing style of play.

The Swans missed some good chances however and Wigan looked to punish them for that in the second half. They saw two shots hit the woodwork before a penalty was saved by Michel Vorm.

Martinez said that on another day, his side would have won the game:

'When you miss a penalty and hit the crossbar twice, then you might expect to win the game,'

'If you play that game ten times again then you're likely to win it.

'We grew into the game second half and looked a real threat, and I thought that we dropped two points today.'

'They were so arrogant on the ball and that's the biggest strength you can have in football. I felt it was a really difficult game today but our concentration was excellent.

'Their squad is well balanced and I believe Swansea City will be very, very competitive this season.'

'Sometimes you can get carried away with the occasion, But I thought in the second half we hurt them a bit more which was pleasing.'

On balance, Wigan were made to look very average in the first half after a good performance from the Swans, but their main concern is converting chances into goals.

I thought it was a fair result, both teams had chances and on balance a point was deserved, we didn't do enough in front of goal to win the game and they hit the post twice, but they didn't look very good in the first half as we dominated.
