Gueret & Oakes Compete To be No.1

Andy Oakes is expected to sign a 1-year contract for the Swans soon as he competes with Willy Gueret to be the No.1 keeper at the club.

After a successful trial, the former Walsall shot-stopper has verbally agreed to sign a contract and he says he's trying his ultimate best to be our new No.1:

'I'm doing my damnedest every day in training to make sure I'm playing in the first game of the season,'

'We've only known each other a couple of weeks, but myself and Willy (Gueret) are great friends already.

'But like any position, the one who is playing best will be the one who is picked.

'I think I'll be good for Willy and he'll be good for me. We'll work each other hard and learn from each other and that can only be good news for the club. It's been brilliant battling with him so far.'

Oakes was due to travel with the squad today for a 5-day training camp and is expected to sign when he gets back.

He added: 'Hopefully I'll be a Swansea player by the time we get back.

'I was offered the chance to stay at Walsall but they got relegated and I didn't want to drop that far down.

'A few clubs came in for me, but there was no thinking for me to do when I heard about Swansea. Everybody knows how well they did getting to the play-offs last year and hopefully this time we can go one better.'

Goalkeeping coach Tony Pennock has been sidelined for a few months after breaking a leg when playing for Newport in a pre-season friendly.

I really do hope that Oakes proves to be a real challenger .

I have read a few comments from Walsall fans about Oakes, and the majority put his form last season down to confidence, and the fact that he was playing for a poor team. Let's hope signing for us will give him the boost he needs and he can then compete with Gueret for the No.1 spot.

welllets hope he is a swans player soon
swanz_gal_05
if he signs for us I think he will make a good challenger for guret, its about time we had a 2nd goalie that will give guret competition because guret go's hot and cold somtimes and Murphy didnt have the expirence.

When willie had some bad games, he was not replaced by Murphy. I hope that Jackett will be brave enough to bring in Oakes this season.
