Marcos Senna has said 'goodbye' to Villareal fans as he prepares himself for a new challenge, hopefully in the Premier League with Swansea City.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to sign the Spanish midfielder, who would add plenty of experience to the squad and provide an excellent replacement for Darren Pratley who joined Bolton Wanderers after turning down a new contract.
Rodgers believes a deal can be done to sign Senna:
"I`ve spoken to Marcos and the chairman has spoken to the agent and I think a deal can be done,"
"Both parties are aware something can happen and we`re prepared for it if it`s right for us and fits into what we`re trying to do.
"There is a possibility and there is no doubt we`re talking about a fantastic player who was probably one of the top midfield players in the world a couple of seasons ago.
"We know injury restricted him to about 20 games last season, but my contacts in Spain tell me he is very professional and looks after himself in the right manner so, if we think it`s right for us in terms of finance and personality for this squad, then we can assess it."
Senna's agent also spoke about a possible move:
"He phoned coach Brendan Rodgers, who speaks perfect Spanish, who told him they wanted him,"
"I was thrilled because he saw they really want to have him on the team.
'The negotiations are going very fast and could be closed earlier than expected."
Marcos Senna revealed that Villareal offered him reduced terms on a new contract and he now looks set to leave:
"I thought they (Villarreal) would recognise my years at the club but it seems they only took into consideration my injuries last season.
"I am aware that the club has a new concept in the face of the financial system and was ready to reduce my earnings."
Senna is also confident that he can still play at the top level, despite turning 35 next month:
"Of course I can play at the top level. I have a full tank yet.
"I am training during my holidays because of last year, to make sure it does not happen again.
"I don`t know if I will train with them all summer, I cannot say but if it is necessary I will be. I have to thank Corinthians for making it possible."
"When I came here in 2002 I found a small team, and I was afraid to face the big boys.
"Today I leave a strong team and important not only in Spain but throughout Europe. I am proud to be a part of all this growth experienced by Villarreal. The title, as I always say, is a matter of time.
"I would like to say goodbye to the fans because the fans deserve it. They have always been very good to me and I am very grateful to them all. Whether the club will do a tribute or whatever, I cannot comment on it."
