Britton Calls For Vetch Atmosphere at The Liberty

Leon Britton is calling for the Swansea City fans to create a Vetch Field-like atmosphere at the Liberty Stadium to give the team vocal support for the remaining 6 home League games.

The midfielder, back at Swansea following a disappointing spell at Sheffield United, spoke about how special the atmosphere was at the Vetch Field, and that we've yet to replicate that at our new home.

The club broke an attendance record yesterday for the visit of Leeds United, as 19,309 witnessed a superb 3-0 win for the Swans. The atmosphere has been rather poor this season but yesterday was one of the best atmospheres at the Liberty Stadium in a long while - the Cardiff City derby games excluded.

Work has finally begun to demolish the Vetch Field and it'll be a sad sight not to still see it stand in the city centre, despite it standing dormant since the final game in 2004.

Britton said:

"There have been a few amazing atmospheres at the Liberty, right up there with the best I`ve experienced at the club," said the Londoner, now in his second South Wales spell after a doomed sojourn at Sheffield United.

"You look at the Leeds game in League One and the derbies, to name a few, and it`s been brilliant to play in.

"But, being honest, I`m not sure if the Liberty has matched the Vetch yet in that way.

"I don`t know whether it`s the way the ground was, with the fans so close to the pitch, or the fact it was smaller and more intense.

"But, although a few games have come close at the Liberty, there was something special about the Vetch at times."

Britton also spoke about the club's most important victory at the Vetch Field in 2003, beating Hull City 4-2 to stay in the Football League.

"The city got behind us then and the atmospheres were incredible. It helped us get over the line and the same can happen .

"There were a lot of bad days at the Vetch, like when I first joined and it was hammering with rain.

"We were 3-0 down to Bury at half time and there were about 2,000 in the ground.

"But you remember the good times and there`s a chance for us to create some great new memories at the Liberty between now and the end of the season.

"Our attendances have been okay but it would be great to sell the place out every week.

"I think everyone here understands it`s difficult in the current climate to find money for tickets at times.

"But hopefully people can see the position we`re in and create something special like we did at the Vetch.

"And as much as we all loved the Vetch, the Liberty is our home now and we have a chance to make some fantastic days there."
