Mowbray Criticises Middlesbrough's Poor Defending

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray criticised his side's poor defending after losing 4-3 to Swansea City having led 3-1.

Marvin Emnes' opening goal against his former club was cancelled out by Nathan Dyer's equaliser, but Boro went back in front before half time as Grounds headed in from a free-kick.

"Was an awesome game to watch, could so easily have gone either way as both defences looked brittle."

Leroy Lita then looked like he had certainly won it for Middlesbrough but Swansea City had other ideas as they took advantage of poor defending and hesitation at the back to win a thrilling game 4-3.

Sub Joe Allen won a penalty to start the comeback as Scott Sinclair netted from the spot. Ashley Williams stabbed the ball in after the home defence failed to deal with a long ball into the box. Another substitute, Craig Beattie scored an excellent just outside the box after his attempted pass to Stephen Dobbie came back off a defender, and the ball dropped nicely for him to fire it into the bottom corner with his left foot.

Mowbray was obviously not happy:

There was some very poor defending out there today,'

'You should never lose grip of a two-goal lead like that but it was all self-inflicted. We have shot ourselves in the foot.

'It comes down to some very poor decision-making on our part.'

'When you analyse the game there were huge problems. We had a game plan and to a large extent it worked but then we made some very silly mistakes.

'Now we are looking over our shoulders again. Had we won we could have gone up three, four five places. Instead we will now have to work very, very hard to make sure we are not looking over our shoulders at the end.'

A great strike from Craig Beattie to win right at the end, defence gave him space as the ball dropped nicely for him to fire it in and find the bottom corner

Must be bad defending to concede 4 goals against us at home
