Johnson Joins Cardiff For £275,000
Wycombe defender Roger Johnson has signed for rivals Cardiff City for a fee of £275,000, which will be paid in installments by the Championship club.
We have already had a £100,000 bid for the defender turned down as we waited for the Chairboys to fill the vacant manager's job before bidding again.
Chairman Huw Jenkins revealed yesterday that Wycombe were willing to sell their club captain but conceded that it was proving difficult to sign him with competition from other clubs.
He said: 'We can compete at the same level in terms of fees and wages. The only problem is we didn't get promoted last season and we cannot offer players Championship football.
'Unfortunately that's a very big bargaining tool that we can't use and, while we will always try to compete, it's not always easy.'
'When a number of clubs are in for a player, it comes down to his preference.
'I would ask whether it is better for a player to join a side like ours pushing for promotion in League One or for him to take a risk in the Championship, which is after all a very difficult league.
'In the past a number of players have said no to Swansea thinking that they would go further in their careers elsewhere only to end up being knocked back.
'I hope that doesn't happen with Roger Johnson.'
