Cotterill: Squad is Fitter Than Last Season

David Cotterill says the extra fitness within the squad could be the difference this season as we aim for promotion to the Premier League.

The Swansea City midfielder says we're 'reaping the rewards' from Rodgers' new attacking approach this season, which contrasts to last year's where former boss Paulo Sousa put too much emphasis on the defence.

Cotterill told the Evening Post:

'It was really important for us to get a point at Doncaster because we at least deserved a draw,'

'I was confident we would get the goal in the end because we kept probing and probing.

'The boys didn't tire and I think the amount of pressure we put on them made their defence crack. You saw it against Boro and you saw it at Doncaster it's a sign of our durability.

'We are fitter now compared to last season. When we are on the ball, we are moving it quickly around the pitch and asking more questions of the defence.

'Last season we didn't really do that. We sat on the ball and were very cautious, but I think we are reaping the rewards of the manager's approach this season. It's looking very promising for us and it could be the difference for us this time.'

Cotterill has found it difficult lately to get a regular place in the first team, but he understands that he won't be playing in every game:

'Of course I want to be starting every game, but I have to look around and realise the manager has plenty of players to come in,'

'The manager is keeping everyone happy because we know how important it is that everyone in the squad plays their part.'

Cotterill faces tough competition for a first team place with the likes of Mark Gower, Joe Allen, Darren Pratley, Kemy Agustien and Andrea Orlandi at the club.
