Jackett: Why I Axed Martinez

Jackett: Why I Axed Martinez

Kenny Jackett has explained his reasons for why he released Roberto Martinez.

The Spanish midfielder was shown the door along with Adrian Forbes and keeper Brian Murphy.

Jackett said:

'I've had discussions with both Roberto and Adrian along the way, but the situation now we've reached the end of the season is we won't be renewing their contracts,'

'They've played a high number of games over the last two years and done very well, I'd like to thank them for the part they've played in our success, but I feel I need to step forward now in both their positions.

'Recently, that central midfield playmaking role has gone to Andy Robinson rather than Roberto.

'Andy's able to get forward and both create and score goals, whereas Roberto is more of a holding midfielder.

'We've then had a defensive player like Kris O'Leary playing alongside him.

'I appreciate everyone has different views, and when you miss out on promotion people focus on specific areas and look for reasons why.

'As a manager, though, what I want is players who have both ability and mobility, rather than someone who can only do one or the other.

'You need athleticism from your central midfielders.

'I wouldn't say I don't like the type of player Roberto is, but when he and Robbo have played together in the centre I don't think there's always been room for both.

'We've lacked the physical presence and the ball-winning ability of an O'Leary or an Owain Tudur Jones in there.

'I brought Darren Way in to strengthen central midfield, and I want to move on in that area for next season. I need people who can run and play.'

'I've got on well with Roberto - he wouldn't have been my club captain if I hadn't respected him or thought he contributed something.

'I understand he's a popular guy, and I've got a lot of respect for his professionalism and what he's done for Swansea.'

He also mentioned why he released Brian Murphy and said:

'Brian hasn't made many starts under myself due to Willy's good form, but I think he's got a good future ahead of him,'

'Having spent two years on the bench at Swansea, what he needs more than anything else is regular first-team football.'

Fair enough reason to release them all. Thought Roberto still had something to offer this season though, would have liked to have seen him used more. Good luck to all 3.

Thanks for the efforts boys. But time to move on and bring in some new blood who will challenge the first team rather than just players who keep the bench warm.

I don't think they'll be missed for their footballing ability. Yes they've done well in previous seasons and they're decent enough blokes etc etc but we need to move on and replace them all with better players if we want to go up automatically. I've read many messages saying Jackett's made a big mistake but I'm glad KJ is looking to the Championship and is preparing for the step up of quality when we get there. It sounds as if Jackett would have released Austin if he didnt have a clause in his contract meaning an automatic extension based on appearances.

Thorbes and martinez have both been great servants to the club but its time to look to the future.Think its willy that should have gone not murphy his shot stopping has always been gd but his positioning for crosses and set plays gets worse every week.
