Cotterill: Britton Wrong To Join My Former Club

David Cotterill has told today's News of the World that Leon Britton was better off staying at Swansea City.

The Welsh international midfielder left Sheffield United - the club Britton has joined - and moved to the Liberty Stadium at the end of 2009 in search of regular first team football.

Cotterill said if he was Leon Britton he'd have stayed at Swansea City, as the Blades play a more direct system that doesn't suit his style.

He said: 'United have gone for the battling approach in the last few years.

'I'm quite surprised they've gone for someone like Leon, who loves to get the ball down and pass it about. If I was Leon I'd have stayed at Swansea.

'We're one of the best footballing sides in the division and the way we play suits Leon down to the ground.

'Last season he was the heartbeat of the side.'

Cotts couldnt get in the Blades side because he simply is not good enough, as will prove to be the case at Swans. All this about a "battling approach" is a smoke screen. Cotts problem is that he totally lacks bottle and doesnt track back to help his defenders. United have played a system because we had no playmaker, with Britton's ability to get the ball down, perhaps Blackwell is looking for that to change.
