Fans Views On Britton's Departure

Leon Britton surprised many fans this week with his decision to join Championship rivals Sheffield United, and snubbing offers from Premiership clubs.

The 27 year-old ends a 7-and-a-half year spell at Swansea City, that has seen him work under 4 managers, in 3 divisions and two different grounds. He made 335 appearances for the club, scored 15 goals and has been a consistent and superb performer ever since he signed on loan from West Ham United back in the dark days of 2002.

While one of our Championship rivals have got a massive bargain, Swansea City only have themselves to blame for losing a top player for nothing in return.

Swans fans have questioned his decision to join the Blades and rejecting offers from Top flight clubs.

Philto believes it was a strange decision, but wishes him all the best:

'We've lost our best player, I don't believe Sousa and Jenkins did enough to keep him. A strange decision though to go to Sheffield. They aren't a footballing club and Britton may regret this. Still I wish him all the best--he's had Swansea City at heart for a number of years.'

A number of players who have left the club in recent years have failed to improve their careers, will Britton follow the likes of Jason Scotland, Jordi Gomez and Andy Robinson?

pembroke jack2 believes it could be a good move for him, as the Blades might give him a better chance of reaching the Premiership:

'Maybe he can see the writing on the wall, no big names coming in just big names going out,I don't think we've seen the last of our departures yet, our midfield can yet be desecrated with possibly Pratley and Williams, possibly the defence with Rangel and Dorus, look at it from Britton's point of view, no one can deny that he played his heart out to the last kick of the ball, but to see 90mins of hard work and effort having no one to capitalise on it in the final third game after game must be frustrating,at least he's going to a club that scored 68 goals last season and who have bought in some really good players already, I honestly think his career will benefit from the move.'

Leon Britton denied that he moved for the money, but keith margam is one of a number of fans who disagree:

'I think he didn't like Paulo Sousa, and the defensive midfield position he played last season.

He certainly moved for the money only, and not an ambition to play in the Premier League, as previously thought, or to be nearer his daughter.

Any player who refuses to sign a new contract from now on should be straight on the transfer list, so we can get a fee for him, not let him run his contract down. The club is too soft.'

phillip says the same:

'I do wish him luck and thank him for his service, but i cant help but think money grabber!!! Sheff Utd is certainly not a move for his daughter or ambition. Purely about Money!! if he goes for the money I'll lose a lot of respect for him.'

Sheffield United fans are delighted with the move, here's a few opinions from fans who have posted their views on Vital Sheffield United:

'Now this is a REALLY good piece of business. Ertl was a solid signing, Boggy could turn out to be very useful, but Britton has long term proven quality. He spent much of last season at Swans doing the 'Monty' job but next season he will be able to put his ability to pick a pass for the team to real effect. I'll bet Evans, Cress, Hendo & Boggy are pleased to see him arrive. Really impressed with the job Blackwell and Birch have done to get him in, signing him up for 3 + 1 years shows good forward planning.'

'Quality signing really surprised he has come to a long ball club, but we are one of the biggest if not the biggest club in the Championship.'

'Now that is a good signing, lets hope we can play to his strengths and not make him look like a fish out of water.'
