Sousa: Williams is Premiership Quality

Paulo Sousa praised Welsh international defender Ashley Williams after he signed a new 4-year deal with Swansea City.

by bussys wig
"well done ash you played well last season and doing great so far this season."
The centre back joined the club as a £400,000 record signing from Stockport County and he has vastly improved and developed at the Liberty Stadium to become one of our best defenders.

His performances in a Swansea City shirt earned him a call-up to John Toshack's Wales squad and he has since become a regular at senior international level.

Paulo Sousa believes he is capable of playing in Premiership and can help the Swans achieve promotion to the top flight. The Swans boss told the Evening Post:

'You cannot make a judgement after only analysing one game,' [after watching Williams in action for Wales vs Russia recently]

'But I watched the national team in their last game and Ash was the best defender.

'There were Premier League players around him, so after looking at that game I felt Ash belongs there too.

'But he belongs to us and we need him to help us reach the Premier League.'

Sousa showed his desire whilst on the pre-season tour in Spain about tieing Williams down to a long term deal, he added:

'I spoke to the chairman about this in Spain,'

'We have some players we need to fix up early, not only for the club but for the players, and Ash is one of those.

'He is happy at the club, he is committed and because of what he gives us, it is right for him to have a contract extension.

'Ash in my opinion is one of the players who has developed a lot, but he is also someone who can go a lot further.

'He is one of the players who can reach the Premier League.'
